Ms Smita Jhingran, presently secretary of the Competition Commission of India (CCI), is a senior civil servant with over 29 years of experience in the Government of India. She is an officer of the Indian Revenue Service (IRS) and has held a wide range of positions in the Revenue Department that involved implementation of tax laws, tax-related investigations, framing of tax assessments and judicial representations. She holds an MPhil in defence and strategic studies, a masters in economics from Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics, Pune, and a bachelor's degree in law.
She has been secretary of the CCI since February 2013. As secretary, she is involved in all activities relating to proceedings of the commission, framing of various rules and regulations, the setting up of infrastructure, recruitment of professional and support staff, training and advocacy. In addition, she heads the International Cooperation Division of the CCI. Secretary is the statutory and nodal functionary in the CCI and the commission is represented by the secretary in all legal proceedings.
